KILT cares: Feeding Knysna with kindness this Mandela Day 2026

This Mandela Day 2026, KILT (Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching) is calling on the spirit of Ubuntu to help nourish our local communities. Behind every empty plate is a story, but this July, without too much effort or expense, you can be the change. Just one extra grocery item dropped into your trolley can completely transform a child’s mealtime from a moment of hunger and anxiety into one of comfort and joy.

Your support is more critical than ever as we navigate the winter season. When schools close for the holidays, vulnerable children lose access to their daily school feeding schemes. This leaves local soup kitchens incredibly stretched and overwhelmed as they try to step in and fill the holiday gap for hungry families who rely on these meals.

To make an even bigger impact, KILT is proud to partner with Food Lovers Market Knysna for a campaign that extends well beyond a single day. While our grand collection kicks off on Mandela Day (Saturday, 18 July), our partnership runs until the end of the month! A dedicated KILT collection bin will be stationed right at the Food Lovers Market till points for the final two weeks of July.

This also gives you the perfect window to give back during Food Lovers Market’s annual Winter Carnival. It is the ideal opportunity to shop essential grocery items at lower, budget-friendly prices, allowing you to stretch your giving budget further and donate even more to those in need.

The reality facing our children

Our mission is grounded in a heartbreaking reality highlighted by the latest Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) Poverty Trends Report. The data reveals that children remain the most vulnerable demographic in our country, making up a staggering 43.1% of South Africa’s poor population.

Alarmingly, nearly half of all children (49.1%) in South Africa live below the poverty line, and over 10.8 million people nationwide remain “food poor.” In Knysna, we see these statistics in the faces of our neighbours, but together, we can change the narrative.

The Goal: 6,700 Food Items for soup kitchens in Knysna

Our annual Mandela Day Food Drive is officially back! In honour of Madiba’s 67-minute legacy, our mission is to collect 6,700 non-perishable food items to stock Knysna’s vital soup kitchens.

These essential community kitchens provide warm, nutritious meals to families year-round, carrying an even heavier load when schools aren’t open to feed our children. Your contribution ensures their shelves stay full and our children’s tummies are fed through every season.

How to donate: Your 2026 action plan

We are making it incredibly easy for you to make a difference during your regular grocery run.

• Where: Food Lovers Market, Knysna. Look for our call to action as you enter the store and our collection bin at the till points.

Simply add one extra item (or more!) to your trolley when you do your weekend shop on Mandela Day. Drop these groceries into the KILT-branded bin, and our team will take care of the packing and direct distribution to the Knysna soup kitchens that need them most.

What to add to your trolley: High-impact food items

If you are wondering what items will make the biggest difference for local families, focus on nutritious, non-perishable staples. Please add these to your shopping list:

• Pulses and grains: Samp and beans, split peas, lentils and barley.
• Dry goods: Rice, mealie meal and sorghum.
• Flavour and nutrition: Soup powders, soup mixes, and stock cubes.
• Canned goods: Any tinned foods (beans, fish, vegetables, or chopped tomatoes).

Every item counts

One extra tin of beans or packet of rice might feel small to you, but to a child missing their school meals, it means everything.
