Beyond the capacity crunch: Empowering every Knysna school to be a school of excellence

Recent community conversations surrounding the Knysna school admissions, 2027 learner placements and severe capacity pressures have highlighted a deeply understandable anxiety for many parents and guardians. Everyone simply wants the best education for their child and when demand for certain schools exceeds available classroom space, it naturally creates stress for families navigating the admissions system.

While the disappointment of limited capacity is a reality for many, this conversation presents a profound opportunity to shift how we look at education in the greater Knysna region.

At the Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching (KILT), we believe the long-term solution isn’t just about expanding the walls of a few schools to accommodate more children – it’s about elevating all of our local schools so that the burden of demand is shared across a thriving community of outstanding institutions.

As KILT Managing Director Sandy Ueckermann frequently emphasises, our core vision is to see all KILT partner schools become “schools of excellence” and, most importantly, “schools of choice”.

No parent should ever have to feel that there is only one “right” school for their child to succeed. Every school in Knysna has the potential to offer a safe, supportive, and high-quality educational environment. Through our Locally Driven Network Support (LDNS) model, KILT is working every day as a community catalyst to make this vision a reality.

Instead of a top-down approach, we partner with 16 schools and thousands of learners across Knysna to shift the education system from within. By addressing the root needs of our educators and children, we are ensuring that excellence is not restricted by geography or school capacity.

Knysna school admissions: How KILT is actively turning local schools into schools of choice

• Empowering the classroom: By sponsoring additional teaching and auxiliary posts, KILT actively helps reduce the teacher-to-learner ratio, ensuring children get the individualised attention they need to thrive.
• Driving digital innovation: Through initiatives like our e-learning programmes and the 2026 Digital Drive, we ensure that modern technology and digital literacy are accessible across our partner schools, equipping learners for the future world of work.
• Holistic support: Academic success is deeply tied to emotional wellbeing. KILT’s psycho-social support, after-school study clubs, and sports programmes create safe, engaging environments that make school a place children want to be.
• Equipping educators: We continuously invest in the professional development and wellbeing of our teachers and school leadership, ensuring that every classroom is led by inspired, supported professionals.

The pressure of school admissions is real, but as a community, we are building a robust, self-sustaining educational foundation.

Turning vision into reality: Systemic growth across Knysna

The systemic change happening in our community is best understood through the collective milestones and data captured in our latest KILT 2025 Annual Report. True excellence looks different in every classroom, and the numbers show that high-quality education and unique opportunities are expanding across our entire network:

• Measurable classroom relief: Our latest data shows that the targeted placement of 98 KILT-funded educator and auxiliary posts successfully helped bring the average teacher-to-learner ratio down from 1:39 to 1:33 in partner schools, allowing for more focused, individualised attention.
• Pioneering vocational streams: Acknowledging that success looks different for every child, KILT is introducing a practical Vocational Streams initiative. Serving as an excellent alternative to a traditional academic track, this programme focuses on hands-on skills that prepare learners directly for technical careers.
• Enriched after-school environments: The growth of our extended-day has introduced cutting-edge opportunities that go far beyond standard school hours. By embedding specialised programmes like Lego Robotics, Eco Clubs and competitive sports leagues, local school grounds are transforming into vibrant hubs where children actively choose to stay, learn, and play.

A Community-Wide Rise in Standards

These successes belong first and foremost to the incredible principals, teachers, and school governing bodies who are driving this transformation from within. KILT’s role is to walk alongside them, providing the collaborative funding, digital tools and psychosocial support required to help them thrive.

When we look past the immediate anxieties of the admissions season, the bigger picture is incredibly reassuring. Whether a child is building a future in technical skills, pursuing digital literacy, or thriving on the sports field and in dynamic after-school clubs, they are receiving a robust, well-rounded education right here in Knysna.

True excellence isn’t locked behind the gates of just one or two traditional choices – it is a community-wide shift that is active, growing and alive across our entire town.
