Let’s help feed Knysna’s children and improve their ability to learn!

KILT food drive 2023 school feeding project

Did you know that many of our children in Knysna are struggling to learn because they don't have enough access to good nutrition? This is a critical issue that demands our attention and action. Fortunately, there's something small we can all do to help.

Join the #KILTFOODDRIVE

KILT’s food drive is happening now, and with your support, we can make a real difference in the lives of these children.

It’s easy for us to make a big difference!

Simply donate basic dry foods when you go shopping. Visit one of the participating supermarkets in Knysna starting May 1st and look out for our bright green donation bin labelled ‘Let’s Help Feed Knysna’s Children’. Simply purchase your choice of non-perishable food, and drop it in the KILT bin and we will do the rest.

Help Us Stock Up on Dry Foods for Those in Need

Any non-perishable foods are welcome, but suggested items include rice, samp and beans, mielie meal, pasta, tinned vegetables and tinned fish. With your support, we can make a real impact on the lives of Knysna’s children and give them the chance to succeed.

Why Nutrition is Crucial for Learning

When it comes to learning, we often think about the importance of studying, attending classes, and doing homework. But there’s another critical factor that we can’t afford to overlook: nutrition. The food we eat provides our bodies with the fuel we need to function properly, and this is particularly true for growing children. Without access to nutritious food, children may struggle to concentrate, retain information, and develop the cognitive skills they need to succeed.

Hunger impacts a child’s chance to succeed

Hunger can be a major barrier to success when it comes to learning, which is why the Education Department provides some food at schools, through their school feeding scheme.

With record levels of food inflation and increasing unemployment and poverty, many families are not able to feed their children without our help. A rising number of South Africans go to bed hungry at night. According to statistics, the average cost of feeding a child is in South Africa is R830 per month, while the Child Support Grant is just R350 per month.

Children who experience poor nutrition may struggle to concentrate in school, have difficulty retaining information, and may suffer from low energy levels and poor academic performance. Research also shows that students who experience hunger are more likely to miss school and have lower test scores than their well-fed peers. Which ultimately affects their future prospects.

This is why KILT’s food drive is so crucial. By donating dry foods you can help give Knysna’s kids the basic foods they need to do well in school, to grow strong and healthy, and to achieve their dreams.
