About us

Excellent work is being done to improve education in South Africa through numerous government and private sector initiatives. Still, the education system is not yet achieving the results it should.

This is where KILT comes in.

Working with government, other non-profit organisations, corporate and individuals, KILT has developed a set of hands-on initiatives that holistically address the education system in Knysna as a driver of positive transformation for the entire community.

Our goal is to make it possible for every child in Knysna to attend any local school and be assured of a learning environment that provides them with a solid foundation and the opportunity to realise their true potential.

In 2017, a number of school principals formed the Proactive Principals of Knysna following discussions facilitated by KILT executive director Gill Marcus. They agreed to work together for greater co-operation across the town’s government schools. Today, 17 schools and some 12 500 learners in greater Knysna benefit from this initiative.

Working together with the Knysna principals has made it clear that only addressing the education system in a systemic and comprehensive way would make a real difference to the quality of education.

KILT aims to achieve this by:

  • Mobilising resources and finance to support Knysna’s non-fee-paying schools
  • Funding additional teaching posts to reduce learner-teacher ratios
  • Strengthening the principals' implementation ability and their leadership and management skills
  • Developing a co-ordinated approach to improving the learning and teaching environment
  • Equipping young people to thrive in the world of work in a rapidly evolving society.

Results since KILT’s foundation in 2017, backed by the enthusiastic determination of the principals and their teams, show significant progress has already been made.
